YFD Prevents Fire Damage to Apartment Building

Quick action by Yakima Fire Department (YFD) firefighters prevented a wildland fire near the 1500 block of East Spruce Street from spreading to a nearby apartment building on Tuesday, July 12th. One person sustained a foot injury. The person did not require medical attention or transport to the hospital. No firefighters were injured.

YFD crews were called to the1500 block of East Spruce Street at 3:45 pm Tuesday in response to a 1,200 square-foot brush fire. The fire was near a multi-story apartment building with an estimated value of $2.5 million. Nine YFD firefighters were at the scene and attacked the fire, preventing damage to the apartment building.

The estimated dollar loss was limited to $5,000, including grass, brush, some trees and encampments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire danger remains high in the area. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the eastern Kittitas Valley, which includes a portion of Yakima County. The warning is in effect today, Wednesday, from 2 to 8 pm. “Gusty winds combined with low relative humidity will lead to critical fire danger, allowing for rapid spread of existing fires and any new fires,” the NWS said in today’s warning.

YFD yesterday also urged caution about outdoor fires.
