South 2nd Avenue Fire Displaces Eight People

Eight occupants are displaced from a duplex in the 1300 block of South 2nd Avenue following a fire today, Friday.

The Yakima Fire Department (YFD) was called to the scene at 4:37 pm today. Crews arrived to find a duplex with the front unit completely involved in fire that included the attic of both units.

Crews knocked down the main part of the fire and searched for three dogs in the front unit. Unfortunately, the dogs perished in the fire.

There were no injuries beyond the loss of the pets.

The fire was contained to the front unit, however occupants from both units were displaced due to the extent of fire in the common attic. Three adults and one juvenile in each of the two units were displaced, eight people in total. The Red Cross was called to provide assistance.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. They determined a pot of oil was left unattended and caught the cabinets on fire, which then extended in to the attic.

Damages were estimated at $150,000.

The Yakima Training Center Fire Department assisted YFD at the scene.
