Fruitvale Boulevard Fire Injures Two People

Two people were injured in a fire last night, Saturday, August 22nd, involving a double-wide manufactured home in the 2700 block of Fruitvale Boulevard. (It is the practice of the Yakima Fire Department to not release the specific address of a private home involved in a fire or other emergency response.)

The Yakima Fire Department (YFD) was called to the scene at 6:45 pm last night. The first crews at the scene found the home fully involved in fire and neighbors pulling an occupant out of the structure. The occupant, a 58-year-old man, sustained second and third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body. He was immediately transported to a local hospital and transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

One of the neighbors sustained a second-degree burn on the bottom of his foot when he stepped on a hot ember while pulling the occupant from the fire. Two other neighbors then assisted in pulling the occupant further away from the structure. The injured neighbor was treated at the scene and released.

A search of the building by YFD found that one dog had died. One other dog is missing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appears to be accidental.

The structure is considered a total loss. The initial estimated dollar loss is $75,000.

A total of 25 firefighters responded to the scene. The Yakima Training Center Fire Department provided assistance.
