Dumpster Fire Damages N. 5th Avenue Building

The estimated dollar loss is $100,000 following a structure fire early this morning, Tuesday, April 6th, involving a commercial building in the 100 block of North 5th Avenue.

Yakima Fire Department (YFD) firefighters evacuated an occupant who was sleeping in a second floor apartment of the building. There were no injuries.

YFD was called to the scene at 12:28 am this morning after a dumpster fire in the area was reported. Crews found a dumpster up against the building. The dumpster was fully engulfed in fire, with flames extending six to eight feet in the air. Smoke and flames extended into the attic of the commercial building.

Crews quickly knocked down the exterior fire. Inside, they had to pull the ceiling to extinguish the attic fire.

The occupant was able to return to his second floor residence after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

A total of 21 firefighters responded. Crews were on scene for about one-and-a-half hours. The Yakima Training Center Fire Department assisted.
