On September 11, 2014, the City of Yakima Fire Department held a 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony at the Yakima Convention Center in honor of the 13th anniversary of the tragic attacks on America, and to pay tribute to the roughly 3,000 civilians and 400 Emergency Responders who lost their lives.

Several members of local Fire Departments and Law Enforcement were on hand, as well as attendees of the Washington Fire Mechanics Fall Conference. One of the conference attendees, Jerry Helm, a talented bagpipe player from Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue, began the ceremony with ‘Amazing Grace’. The ceremonial speech was delivered by Capt. Tom Schneider of the City of Yakima Fire Department. It started at roughly 8:40am, and included a Moment of Silence at 8:46am to mark the time when the first plane struck the World Trade Center Tower.  The closing prayer was delivered by City of Yakima Fire Department Chaplain Susan Whitman.
