Yakima Fire Department (YFD) firefighters were on scene for about an hour this morning, Thursday, in response to a wildland fire on the Yakima Greenway.
Crews were called to an area north of the McGuire Community Playground at 12:29 am Thursday. They found a fire spreading fast in heavy timber, with flames extending 50 to 80 feet in the air.
The fire covered an area measuring about 20,000 square feet between the greenway path and the river.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was determined to have started in a homeless encampment.
Thirteen firefighters responded to the scene.
