At the September 16th Yakima City Council Meeting, Firefighter Brian Smillie was presented with an Apple Award for his heroic act while on vacation at Cannon Beach, Oregon. A family that had been out surfing had been pulled out in a rip current and were not able to paddle back into shore. Fortunately, Brian was able to use his kayak to paddle out in the rip current and pull the family to shore.
