Fires Damage Apartment Building, Outbuilding

The Yakima Fire Department (YFD) responded to three fires in a span of four hours yesterday, Monday.

  • At 1:00 pm yesterday, YFD was called to the 300 block of North 7th Street for a fire involving a two-story, 8-plex apartment building.

The fire began earlier in the day, caused by unattended cooking materials. The occupant of the unit thought they had the fire out, but it continued to burn unnoticed in the ceiling and wall.

Fire crews arrived to find fire in two units, burning in the ceiling of one and the floor of another.

No injuries were reported.

The fire caused extensive damage to both units, with the initial loss estimated at $80,000. The Red Cross was called to assist occupants of the two units displaced by fire.

YFD encourages the public to please call if they have a fire so crews can check to ensure it is extinguished.

  • At 10:03 am Monday, YFD was called to the 1100 block of North 2nd Street for a fire involving a shed or outbuilding.

It was fully involved when fire crews arrived. Quick action by firefighters extinguished the outbuilding fire and kept it from reaching a nearby building. No injuries were reported. The initial estimated loss is $3,000.

The fire was caused by a heat lamp used to keep animals warm. The lamp was placed too close to flammable items. No animals were found in the outbuilding.

YFD reminds the community to please secure heat lamps out of the reach of animals so the lamps aren’t inadvertently knocked over. As with space heaters and baseboard heaters, heat lamps need to be at least three feet away from flammable materials.

  • At 9:08 am Monday, YFD was called to the Yakima Greenway for a brush fire.

The fire along the Greenway was near the Valley Mall Boulevard exit. It covered an area measuring about 3,600 square feet. It was burning in heavy underbrush. A crew was on site for about an hour extinguishing the fire. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.
