The Yakima Fire Department (YFD) was called to a fire at 1:42 pm yesterday, Monday, which damaged the Yakima Greenway Foundation office building and destroyed a storage building belonging to the Foundation.
The fire also destroyed playground equipment at Sarg Hubbard Park.
It’s believed the fire began midway between the Yakima Greenway path and the Yakima River. The fire spread due to winds from the east and dry brush in the area. The cause is under investigation.
Embers from the fire ignited the two buildings and the playground structure.
There were no injuries reported.
The estimated dollar loss is $200,000.
Besides saving the Greenway’s office from being a total loss, firefighters were able to protect a nearby hotel, two pavilion buildings, a footbridge and a railroad display.
Fire crews were on scene until 8:48 pm last night and returned to the area today.
Yakima County Fire District No. 5 and Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue provided mutual aid at the scene.
Sarg Hubbard Park remains closed as of today, Tuesday. Updates on the park’s status are available on the Greenway’s website, https://www.yakimagreenway.org/
