City of Yakima firefighters were called to a structure fire early this morning, Monday, involving a 4-unit apartment building at 407 South 81st Avenue.
The fire occurred at 12:21 am today when a resident in one of the apartments was cooking with a pan of oil on the stove. When the stove caught fire, she escaped with minor burns to her hands.
All of the building’s other occupants were evacuated without injury.
Firefighters worked quickly to stop the fire, limiting damage to the one apartment where the fire began. However, there was significant damage to that apartment’s kitchen area, in addition to fire and smoke damage in the unit.
The initial dollar loss due to damage from the fire was estimated at $100,000.
A total of 20 firefighters responded to the fire. The West Valley Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene.
