YFD Responds to Early Morning Fires

The Yakima Fire Department (YFD) responded to a series of fires and fire alarms this morning, Wednesday, December 16th.

At about 1:45 am today, YFD was called to the 900 block of North 15th Avenue for a fire involving a garage attached to a single-wide mobile home. The occupant and his dog had already evacuated after being alerted by a neighbor. The neighbor spotted the fire and banged on the door until the occupant was awakened and escaped. There were no injuries.

Firefighters contained the fire to the garage and the occupant was able to return to his home. The estimated damage is valued at $10,000. The probable cause is electrical.

At 3:50 am, YFD crews were called to the 300 block of West Yakima Avenue. There was a smell of something burning on the third floor, however nothing was found. It’s believed burned food may have prompted the fire alarm.

At 4:30 am, a dumpster fire in the 200 block of North 4th Street extended into the building of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Crews arrived to find smoke filling the church’s offices and common areas. Firefighters remained on scene for over an hour to make sure the fire did not spread through the attic. Damage was estimated to be about $10,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At 5:40 am, just as YFD crews were leaving St. Joseph’s, an automatic fire alarm sounded two blocks away in the 200 block of North 2nd Street. This turned out to be burned food and YFD was not needed at the scene.
